Using Personas

Personas are pre-configured gateway templates designed for specific workflows and use cases. They provide a fast way to get started with curated collections of MCP servers and tools tailored to different roles and needs.

What are Personas?

A persona is a complete gateway configuration that includes:

  • Curated App Selection - Pre-selected MCP servers relevant to a specific use case
  • Optimized Tool Sets - All necessary functions from each app
  • Best Practice Configuration - Settings optimized for the intended workflow
  • One-Click Setup - Apply the entire configuration instantly

Think of personas as "gateway blueprints" - instead of manually selecting apps and configuring tools, you can apply a persona and have a fully-configured gateway ready in seconds.

After applying a persona, you need to connect the apps:

  1. Navigate to the Apps page
  2. Look for apps with "Needs Connection" status
  3. Click Connect on each app and complete OAuth authentication
  4. Once all apps are connected, your gateway becomes active

  • View it in the Gateways page
  • Monitor its usage in Observability
  • Customize the configuration if needed

Importing Persona Tokens

Persona tokens allow you to import gateway configurations shared by others.

What is a Persona Token?

A persona token is an encoded string containing:

  • Gateway name
  • List of apps (by ID)
  • Tool configurations
  • Creation metadata

How to Import a Persona

  1. Navigate to the Personas page
  2. Scroll to the "Import Persona" section
  3. Paste the persona token into the input field
  4. Click Import

Note: You must be signed in to import personas.

After Importing

The imported gateway will be created with the exact configuration from the token. You'll still need to complete OAuth authentication for each app included in the gateway.

Sharing Your Gateway as a Persona

Want to share your custom gateway configuration with teammates? You can export any gateway as a persona token.

Creating a Persona Token

  1. Go to the Gateways page
  2. Find the gateway you want to share
  3. Click the Share icon on the gateway card
  4. Click Copy Persona Token

What Gets Shared

When you create a persona token, it includes:

  • Gateway name
  • List of apps (by ID)
  • Tool selections for each app

What's NOT shared:

  • Your authentication tokens
  • Usage data or logs
  • Personal information

Recipients must connect apps themselves using their own credentials.

Personas vs Regular Gateways

Personas (Pre-configured)

Pros:

  • ✅ Instant setup - no configuration needed
  • ✅ Curated by experts for specific workflows
  • ✅ Best practices built-in
  • ✅ Great for getting started quickly

Cons:

  • ⚠️ Fixed app selections (though you can modify after)
  • ⚠️ May include apps you don't need

Best For: First-time users, common workflows, team standardization

Regular Gateways (Custom)

Pros:

  • ✅ Complete control over app selection
  • ✅ Choose exactly the tools you need
  • ✅ Optimized for your specific workflow

Cons:

  • ⚠️ Requires understanding of each app
  • ⚠️ Takes longer to set up

Best For: Specific custom workflows, experienced users, unique use cases

Can You Modify Personas?

Yes! After applying a persona, you can edit the gateway to add/remove apps, modify tool selections, and rename it. Personas are just starting points.
